StorInNER: The Story of an Initiative to Novate Emerging/Evolving Research
From the time that the Social Sciences have endeavored to copy the Exact Physical Sciences, their scientists have been obsessed by a race toward precision and control eluding them altogether. And they have compensated with many theories designed to respond to such challenges, and have come up with many concepts addressing the issues, like Validity and Reliability, not to mention a panoply of techniques, quantitative and qualitative, and abundant literature embroiling the Social Sciences in countless discussions and disputes. And authentic, reminiscent of relevant characteristics, palatable, treatable, repeatable, operational Stories have been lacking.
Abundant calculations have pervaded the scientific literature of the Social Sciences, under the pretense of validity, reliability, predictability, only to be followed by complicated qualifications that have taken a life of their own and given Social Scientists a veneer of reputable science. And The qualitative methods have competed with contorted theories meant to frame their investigations with the cloth of Science. In the process, one has been left with a hunger for the story, good old stories, when dealing, not only with the confusion, but also with the scarcity of applicable milestones lost in the circle of contouring jargon explaining the never ending proof of science in the details.
The quantitative methods have embarked in a fast food treatment of social sciences data and offering a logic that seems to be self serving, forcing the facts to prove the validity of its operations, while relegating the story to an afterthought. The rationales of quantitative methods in the social sciences advertise the proof in the pudding while negating it, since their calculations are the proof, and the story is confined to these, and restrained is a better word. This is clearly fast food science advertising the cheese and milk of numbers all the time. Qualitative methods have varied offerings and revel in the multiplicity of their methods supposed to capture the story, but deforming it in the process in order to fit their theories. So other stories are advertised to represent the real stories, and buzz words are sold in that fast fast food store. The proof is still in the pudding there, as it seems that the stories proposed are proofs in and of themselves, just because they are able to articulate stories of the story.
The proof is not in the pudding, but the Proof is in The Menu. Stories relate to each other and form a body of knowledge to be explored, and they validate each other, offering reliability to each other in the authenticity of their mutual references. Mixed Methods are very useful, but they have to be articulated in a process that present earmarks of the stories based on checklists reverberated from experiences expressed in big data and/or in the larger picture, a menu of proofs.
THAT'S WHY MODELING IS EVERYTHING IN RESEARCH! THE MODEL DICTATES THE RELEVANCE TO REALITY.
